A root canal is needed when decay reaches the nerve inside the tooth or from advanced periodontal disease. This can also be accompanied by infection, known as an abscessed tooth, which can be very painful. Many people are afraid of root canals, but the truth is, root canals don’t hurt! They relieve the pain of a toothache. In a root canal, Dr. Roberts will go inside the tooth with special instruments and remove the nerve and the decay, which is the source of the infection. This will provide pain relief and in the future there will be no pain in the tooth, because the nerve is gone. There will only be feeling in the surrounding tissue of the tooth. The tooth will be finished with a build-up and a crown. Root canals can save a tooth that might otherwise have to be extracted.
