We wanted to take a minute to tell you about the different types of dental x-rays that you may have done at Dr.Roberts’ office. There are a few different kinds, and Dr.Roberts uses them all to view different areas in the mouth and different views of the teeth.
Bitewing X-rays:
These are used to check for decay between the teeth. They show the upper and lower molars and premolars. They may also be used to view how the teeth line up, and build-up between the teeth as a result of periodontal disease. These are the x-rays you will have taken at your routine check-up and cleaning appointment.
Periapical X-ray (PA):
This x-ray is used to view the whole tooth, from the crown to the root. Dr.Roberts will use this x-ray to check for infection or decay. This X-ray shows 1-2 teeth in one portion of the upper or lower jaw.
Panoramic X-ray:
This X-ray is a two-dimensional view of the upper and lower jaw including all teeth. It can be used to view wisdom teeth that have not come in yet, permanent teeth that are coming in, and teeth that may have infection and decay present. Dr.Roberts can use this x-ray to view the TMJ if there is pain/swelling present.
3D panoramic x-ray:
What does the bone structure look like? How great is the distance to the nerve canal? In all dental disciplines, there are numerous questions that can be answered far more easily using 3D x-rays. This is a cat scan of the upper and lower jaws. This is our newest technology in x-raying. Dr.Roberts uses this x-ray for planning of root canals, implants, and even general dental problems that may not be visible by a 2 dimensional view.
We are also able to use our 3D panoramic x-ray machine to take bitewing x-rays on small children that may have smaller mouths. This allows us to diagnose decay that may not be visible.
Full Mouth Series (FMX):
A full mouth series is what we usually take at your first new patient cleaning appointment. It includes 18 x-rays, 4 of those being bitewing x-rays and the rest Periapical x-rays. This allows Dr.Roberts to do a thorough exam of all of your teeth.
